Motorola S9-HD Bluetooth MOTOACTIV Stereo Headset (Gloss Black) Review
I’ve had these for 2 months now and use them just about every other day. I thought I’d write up my own review, since the reviews I read before purchasing this product didn’t really convince me one way or another.
I mostly use them with my IPhone 4 at the gym, and they work great there. I’ve also discovered that the performance of the headset varies greatly depending on which environment they are used in, which probably explains why the reviews for it go from really great to really bad. I’ll go over this in more details.
A common complaint is the fact that you can’t use the track skip (PREV/NEXT) feature of the headset to control the music from an IPhone or IPod. It even says so in the headset’s documentation. Turns out upgrading your IPhone to iOS 4.1, which just came out, will actually fix this issue.
Whenever I turn them on, they always synch up with my IPhone right away. I’ve never even once had to fiddle with getting them to synch.
The battery charge is OK. I get just over 5 hours of usage from the headset from a single charge. I’m usually at the gym for 1 1/2 hour at the time, so I made it an habit of recharging them every 3 sessions. On the IPhone’s side, the bluetooth usage does not even seem to make a dent to the battery’s charge level.
Actual quality of the set itself is OK. They feel a bit like I should be over protective of them, and the ear pieces do fall off once in a while if I just leave them in my gym bag. I haven’t had any problems with sweat collecting on them and shorting them out like some users have reported. Knowing it’s been an issue for some people, I’ll take them off if I’ve been running on the treadmill for a few miles and wipe them off but that always seems unnecessary as they just stay dry. I do break a sweat, but probably just not in an amount measurable in gallons.
Back to performance. I believe this is true of most bluetooth devices. Here’s what I noticed:
At the gym – best performance ever. I can go *weeks* without them skipping even once. That includes having them in the cup holder while running on the treadmill, and leaving them on a weight rack while filling up my water bottle and get a good range of about 25 feet. I also have whatever health tracking apps running on the phone at the same time, and the experience in this scenario is flawless all around. I think this is due to the “box” effect. The signal from your phone bounces off on the walls and ceiling of a moderately opened space, and reception is just excellent. Also you can lay down on your back on the weight bench and the headset will not get in the way. They also make you look like the cool kid. I’ve even a few times forgot where exactly I’d set my phone down.
In the car – best performance again. Same box effect I suppose.
Outside, while walking or hanging out – ok and/or sometime sub-par performance. Walking around with the phone in my pockets and the headset over my ears, I get significantly more skips than in the previous scenarios. Just about one every few minutes. I’m assuming the headset is only getting a signal from line of sight and doesn’t get the boost from the box effect. And this is from the same headset/phone combo that gives me a flawless performance at the gym. It’s tolerable, but noticeable.
While cooking – bad performance. I’ll be hanging out in the kitchen fixing some chow with my headsets on, and I’ll leave my IPhone on the kitchen table. All is well until I stick my head in the pantry, which is like 2 feet away, but well in line of sight. Then the music skips. This scenario also appears to match my “box” effect theory, the box being the kitchen, and the pantry being another box outside the box. Turning the microwave on at any time will also cause major skippage, probably from competing signals inside the “box”.
After the cat just pooped – bad performance. Apparently the automatic kitty litter’s motor also interferes with the bluetooth signal. You get the idea with signals now…
My personal verdict: I like them because I use them at the gym under the best performance “box” scenario and the freedom from wires while running on the treadmill and lifting weights is priceless. Music sound quality is comparable to whatever wired headset you would pick up at the store. Sound quality with these when talking on the phone is poor, but I don’t use them for that much. I don’t cook a lot and I don’t mind using my wired headsets when I go outside. I’m also not usually home when the cat has to go. I have a high incidence of breaking fragile toys, so the fact this one is still in one piece is another plus.
Shop around if you decide to buy them. The fruit store sells them for about twice has much as the big box retailers do.
